Following some very useful warnings from Tony
Healey and Andy Hampshire on the
Sylva site, I'm being ultra careful. I identified the connector for the temperature sensor, which was stuffed into a broken something so had all the routes clear. I then very carefully unpicked the loom all the way round, disconnecting the irrelevant parts that simply clipped in. Once I had found the ignition switch connection and removed the previous owners crude immobiliser from it I settled down with the ECU branch and using Justin's diagram successfully
identified and labelled all the wires.

Having done that it became a bit clearer that Mazda had actually prepared the looms with some degree of segregation so I taped it up loosely and packed up. Re-reading the Haynes section on the ECU I think I need to make sure that the Error signal has somewhere to show up as I will not have the MX5 instrument cluster and that I have an emulation of the re-set method of disconnecting the battery and pressing the brake pedal. Puzzle for tomorrow.
