Bank Holiday weekend looming - hope loom arrives too. Back from Nuremberg to mixed news. Gap year daughter had phoned on Friday to say that contrary to suggested itinerary she and Tom went into the Lebanon and visited Beirut and the Bek'aa valley last week to see Baalbek. Just as news of all the fighting up there breaks. I'm sneakily full of admiration and jealous but parentally rather moved. I last visited just as the civil war broke out in 1973 and it is fabulous at Baalbek but I do wish Emma had told us of her plans in advance because the FCO is vehement about the dangers and their evac insurance would have lapsed. Especially since it appears they both got runny tummy's and last night we heard that Tom had been laid up. He is recovering but tired, though at least they are in Damascus. When I got it in 1973 I was in a Beirut hospital for a day or so. Worst of all Catherine has heard that her weekend away is off and given that the decorator cannot get to us until September insists we re-paint Emma's bedroom this weekend in anticipation of her getting home in July! I quite understand why she is so focused like this but I don't stand a snowball's chance of wriggling out to work on the car until it is done.
